At daycare, Miss Lemmon laid out the fabric squares.

“Today we’re learning stitches,” she said brightly.

Lollie purred and picked up her needle. She loved making tiny stitches, but she had a special way of doing them—loops and swirls like dancing vines.

Miss Lemmon leaned over. “Oh, Lollie, that’s not quite right. Learn to follow the rules first. Then you can do it your own way.”

Lollie’s ears drooped. She wanted to do her swirly stitches right now.

At snack time, she whispered to Poppy, “But I like my stitches this way.”

Poppy tilted her head. “Maybe you could do them Miss Lemmon’s way for class… and your way at home on your own dress.”

Maddie nodded. “That way you learn both.”

Lollie thought about it. Maybe rules weren’t cages—they were stepping-stones. And maybe her swirls could wait until she’d learned the steps.

By the end of the day, she stitched neat rows for Miss Lemmon. But that night, on her own dress, her needle danced in joyful loops.

Tiny cinnamon rolls with swirly icing—just like Lollie’s stitches, each one had its own pattern.

🌈 Imagine This

If you learned something new, would you rather follow the steps first—or try your own way right away?

What’s something you do with your own special “swirl”?
